securing your dream location

The most critical step in planning your Maroon Bells wedding is securing a permit. The main ceremony site is the Maroon Bells Amphitheater, a reservable space managed by the U.S. Forest Service.

to note:

While the Amphitheater is the main wedding venue, the larger area offers stunning options for photos and smaller ceremonies.

The amphitheater provides built-in seating for guests and a direct view of the Maroon Bells. It’s a convenient option but requires a parking permit for a private parking spot.

A beautiful, easily accessible location with the iconic reflection of the peaks in the water. While popular with tourists, sunrise or sunset ceremonies can offer more privacy.

For more adventurous couples, a short hike beyond Maroon Lake leads to Crater Lake. This location is more secluded and offers a rugged, alpine backdrop.

To avoid crowds and achieve the best light for photos, consider a sunrise or sunset ceremony. The "alpenglow" at sunrise is particularly famous, casting a soft, pink light on the peaks. Weekdays (Monday through Thursday) are also less crowded than weekends.

logistics & transportation

shuttle service

From mid-June to early October, Maroon Creek Road is closed to most private vehicles from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. All visitors must use the public shuttle, which departs from the Aspen Highlands Ski Area. Tickets must be reserved in advance.

vehicle passes

If you have a reservation for the Maroon Bells Amphitheater, you are allotted five vehicle passes, which allow you and key vendors to drive to the site. These passes must be picked up at the welcome station in advance.

parking

Guests and vendors without a vehicle pass will need to park at Aspen Highlands and take the shuttle. It's crucial to communicate this to everyone attending your wedding to ensure they arrive on time.

accessibility

The Amphitheater has limited accessibility. While the main path is generally accessible, it can be snowy or icy in certain months.

Seasonal
Considerations

The beauty of Maroon Bells changes dramatically with the seasons, and each offers a unique experience.

what to expect

The most popular time of year, with lush greenery, wildflowers, and comfortable temperatures. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, so a morning ceremony is often recommended.

The iconic aspen trees turn a vibrant gold and orange, making this a highly sought-after and busy season. Reservations for this time are the hardest to get. The road to Maroon Bells typically closes in mid-November due to snow.

The road to Maroon Bells is closed to traffic, making the area much less accessible. A winter wedding would require a snowmobile or a long ski/snowshoe trek, making it a very adventurous and difficult option.

As a remote and popular destination, vendor costs can be higher. This includes photographers, videographers, officiants, hair and makeup artists, and florists. Travel fees for vendors not local to Aspen are also common.

Approximately $30 from a Colorado County Clerk's office. Colorado has no waiting period, and you can even self-solemnize (marry yourselves without an officiant).

Aspen is an expensive mountain town, so be prepared to budget for lodging for yourselves and your guests.
