MAROON BELLS ELOPEMENT PHOTOGRAPHY AND FILM

MAROON BELLS IS AN UNFORGETTABLE PLACE TO EXCHANGE VOWS, BUT THE EXPERIENCE DEPENDS ON CAREFUL PLANNING. CEREMONY RESERVATIONS, VEHICLE ACCESS, SHUTTLE TIMING, GUEST COMFORT, CHANGING WEATHER, AND HIGH-ELEVATION LIGHT ALL AFFECT HOW THE DAY SHOULD BE STRUCTURED.

Summit Photo & Film is based in Aspen and offers photography, videography, or both through one coordinated team. We help couples build coverage around the ceremony window, transportation, portrait locations, and the sound and movement they want preserved.

The Maroon Bells Amphitheater currently opens for reservations one year ahead on a rolling basis. It is not a lottery. Secure the ceremony reservation through Recreation.gov, then contact us so we can help shape the photography and film timeline around the date.

LIGHT, LOCATION & YOUR TIMELINE

FIND THE RIGHT TIME

WHILE THE AMPHITHEATER IS THE MAIN WEDDING VENUE, THE LARGER AREA OFFERS STUNNING OPTIONS FOR PHOTOS AND SMALLER CEREMONIES.

MAROON BELLS AMPHITHEATER

The amphitheater provides built-in seating for guests and a direct view of the Maroon Bells. It’s a convenient option but requires a parking permit for a private parking spot.

MAROON LAKE

A beautiful, easily accessible location with the iconic reflection of the peaks in the water. While popular with tourists, sunrise or sunset ceremonies can offer more privacy.

CRATER LAKE TRAIL

For more adventurous couples, a short hike beyond Maroon Lake leads to Crater Lake. This location is more secluded and offers a rugged, alpine backdrop.

TO NOTE:

To avoid crowds and achieve the best light for photos, consider a sunrise or sunset ceremony. The “alpenglow” at sunrise is particularly famous, casting a soft, pink light on the peaks. Weekdays are also less crowded than weekends.

LOGISTICS & TRANSPORTATION

SHUTTLE SERVICE

From mid-June to early October, Maroon Creek Road is closed to most private vehicles from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. All visitors must use the public shuttle, which departs from the Aspen Highlands Ski Area. Tickets must be reserved in advance.

VEHICLE PASSES

If you have a reservation for the Maroon Bells Amphitheater, you are allotted five vehicle passes, which allow you and key vendors to drive to the site. These passes must be picked up at the welcome station in advance.

PARKING

Guests and vendors without a vehicle pass will need to park at Aspen Highlands and take the shuttle. It's crucial to communicate this to everyone attending your wedding to ensure they arrive on time.

ACCESSIBILITY

The Amphitheater has limited accessibility. While the main path is generally accessible, it can be snowy or icy in certain months.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Seasonal Considerations

THE BEAUTY OF MAROON BELLS CHANGES DRAMATICALLY WITH THE SEASONS, AND EACH OFFERS A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE.

SUMMER

The most popular time of year, with lush greenery, wildflowers, and comfortable temperatures. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, so a morning ceremony is often recommended.

FALL

The iconic aspen trees turn a vibrant gold and orange, making this a highly sought-after and busy season. Reservations for this time are the hardest to get. The road to Maroon Bells typically closes in mid-November due to snow.

WINTER

The road to Maroon Bells is closed to traffic, making the area much less accessible. A winter wedding would require a snowmobile or a long ski or snowshoe trek.

Still deciding on a season? Our Maroon Bells Wedding Guide breaks down each one month by month.

WHAT COSTS TO CONSIDER

Costs for a Maroon Bells wedding include the Amphitheater site fee, a Colorado marriage license, shuttle or vehicle-pass logistics, vendor travel, and Aspen lodging. Because fees and reservation rules change year to year, we keep a current breakdown in our Maroon Bells Wedding Guide.

Aspen is an expensive mountain town, so be prepared to budget for lodging for yourselves and your guests.
