Mood Boards Guide for Wedding Photography & Video

A wedding ceremony in the Aspen mountains in Colorado used in mood board guide.

This Mood Boards Guide will help you create a clear and inspiring vision for your wedding photography and videography.

Creating personalized coverage begins with understanding your personalities, preferences, hobbies, and relationship. That is why every couple we work with completes a mood board before the wedding day.

By following this Mood Boards Guide, you help our team align creatively and document your wedding in a way that feels intentional and authentic.

What Is a Mood Board?

A mood board is an inspiration board where couples collect images and videos that reflect their style preferences.

Instead of trying to explain your vision in words, you show us visually. For example, you may love a certain angle, composition, pose, lighting style, or post production approach. Additionally, you might be drawn to candid moments, dramatic portraits, or soft natural light.

Because of this, your mood board allows our entire team to align creatively. From photographers and cinematographers to album designers and post production, everyone understands your preferences before the wedding day begins.

Mood Board vs Shot List

It is important to understand that a mood board is not a shot list.

A shot list is a detailed checklist of specific images that must be captured throughout the day. However, rigid shot lists often restrict creativity. Instead of focusing on authentic storytelling, they encourage duplication and recreation.

By contrast, a mood board inspires direction without limiting artistry. It guides tone and feeling rather than forcing replication. As a result, your wedding photography and videography remain natural, elevated, and original.

How to Create a Wedding Photography Mood Board

Creating your wedding photography mood board is simple.

Option 1: Select around 20 images from Summit’s portfolio
1. Visit our website and explore our wedding galleries.
2. Select approximately 10 to 25 images that reflect your style and preferences.
3. Download the images you love most.
4. Log in or create a Pinterest account.
5. Create a new Pinterest board.
6. Upload the selected images to your board.
7. Add Dale@summitphotoandfilm.com as a collaborator.
8. For each image, include a one or two sentence description explaining what you love. For example: lighting, pose, composition, background, or editing style.
9. You can also add images you like on Pinterest.

Characteristics of an Ideal Mood Board

Here are a few characteristics of an ideal Moodboard:

  • Includes 10 to 25 images
  • Contains written descriptions explaining your preferences
  • Focuses on feeling and style rather than a checklist
  • Includes images from your venue or similar wedding venues

In other words, clarity matters more than quantity.

How to Create a Wedding Videography Mood Board

Like a photography Moodboard, a video Moodboard is also critical to helping us understand your style preferences. To create one, please follow these instructions:

  • Go to our Wedding Videography Portfolio
  • Watch a few of the videos
  • In an email, let us know a few notes about what you liked or didn’t like about the video, or some specific shots or scenes that you liked. It helps if you let us know the time of a specific shot you are mentioning (i.e. 2:32)
  • Your descriptions can be 1 or 2-sentences of what you like about the video or specific shot (i.e. the pose, the lighting, the background, editing style, etc)

Why Mood Board Guide Works
